From Ragnar Jónasson, the award-winning author of the international bestselling Ari Thór series, The Girl Who Died is a standalone thriller about a young woman seeking a new start in a secluded village where a small community is desperate to protect its secrets。

Teacher Wanted At the Edge of the World

Una wants nothing more than to teach, but she has been unable to secure steady employment in Reykjavík。 Her savings are depleted, her love life is nonexistent, and she cannot face another winter staring at the four walls of her shabby apartment。 Celebrating Christmas and ringing in 1986 in the remote fishing hamlet of Skálar seems like a small price to pay for a chance to earn some teaching credentials and get her life back on track。

But Skálar isn’t just one of Iceland’s most isolated villages, it is home to just ten people。 Una’s only students are two girls aged seven and nine。 Teaching them only occupies so many hours in a day and the few adults she interacts with are civil but distant。 She only seems to connect with Thór, a man she shares an attraction with but who is determined to keep her at arm’s length。

As darkness descends throughout the bleak winter, Una finds herself more often than not in her rented attic space—the site of a local legendary haunting—drinking her loneliness away。 She is plagued by nightmares of a little girl in a white dress singing a lullaby。 And when a sudden tragedy echoes an event long buried in Skálar’s past, the villagers become even more guarded, leaving a suspicious Una seeking to uncover a shocking truth that’s been kept secret for generations。

Maybe 2。5 stars, bc I enjoyed reading it- getting into the world of this novel; but I felt let down by the resolutions and the ending

Fantastic read, very quick paced and the place is another imposing character of the book。

Creepy, haunting storyAtmospheric and sad book with lost characters who are victims of the harsh Icelandic weather, a shared history , and their bad decisions。

Very interesting story, I did feel a little bit like things weren't quite tied up at the end, but that sort of adds a realistic feel to it anyway。 Things aren't always tied up neatly in life。 Definitely a good picture of life in a remote, tight-knit community where there's very little trust for outsiders and lots of secrets。 Very interesting story, I did feel a little bit like things weren't quite tied up at the end, but that sort of adds a realistic feel to it anyway。 Things aren't always tied up neatly in life。 Definitely a good picture of life in a remote, tight-knit community where there's very little trust for outsiders and lots of secrets。 。。。more

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。THREE OUT OF FIVE STARS!!! 6。14 CAWPILEThis book felt very slow and very repetitive。 The last 20% of the book is where things started to heat up and we got some answers。 The fact that this book has SUPER short chapters was such a pro and made it seem like the book just flew by! I also loved learning about Icelandic culture and I wasn't aware this was a translated work before I picked it up but that's cool。I read this book along I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。THREE OUT OF FIVE STARS!!! 6。14 CAWPILEThis book felt very slow and very repetitive。 The last 20% of the book is where things started to heat up and we got some answers。 The fact that this book has SUPER short chapters was such a pro and made it seem like the book just flew by! I really enjoyed The Girl Who Died。 The isolated nature of the setting was really fitting and kind of creepy。 For me the Hulda trilogy was so exceptional and I couldn't help but compare this book to any of those stories in the series i。e。 very large shoes to fill。 Nonetheless, I would recommend this one without hesitation。 I recently purchase his latest book, Outside, and am very much looking forward to reading it。 Cheers! Het begin en het midden waren goed, de twist was prima maar het einde was het totaal niet voor mij。 Sorry, maar het was opeens afgelopen en ik dacht echt ‘that’s it?’

I loved the Icelandic feel of this story。 The creepy-ness lurking。 Questionable characters。 I love all things Iceland。 But…The ending seemed like it was from a different book。 In a span of 4 pages everything changed。 These ten people residing in this small town were simply hiding a secret? Didn’t ring true。 Una “loved” Thor - didn’t ring true。 No justice came for the two little girls。 The three are still in prison and una - who is a moral woman- is ok with saying nothing。 Didn’t ring true。 Descr I loved the Icelandic feel of this story。 The creepy-ness lurking。 Questionable characters。 I love all things Iceland。 But…The ending seemed like it was from a different book。 In a span of 4 pages everything changed。 These ten people residing in this small town were simply hiding a secret? It was just ok。 The last couple of chapters were exciting though。

Part detective story/part ghost story—Una from Reykjavik needs a change so she takes a teaching job for two students in the nether-regions of Iceland on the Northeastern Atlantic。 Skalar is a town of intense cold and wind, heavy darkness, isolation, and mysteries, a tight-knit place of loyalty and secrets。 Una is an outsider who must learn the ways of this town, but she finds herself at odds with the residents in every “step” she takes。 No spoilers here, but I read the book in two sittings。

This didn't really work for me, and it could partially be due to the translation that felt odd and stilted throughout。As for the plot, it felt like the author didn't really know where he was going with the story: is it a thriller? a relationship drama? a whodunnit? a ghost story? Or just everything and nothing all at once? The random flashbacks in the middle of different chapters, where we have no clue whose PoV we're listening to, felt like an afterthought that eventually doesn't even matter to This didn't really work for me, and it could partially be due to the translation that felt odd and stilted throughout。As for the plot, it felt like the author didn't really know where he was going with the story: is it a thriller? a relationship drama? a whodunnit? a ghost story? 3。5 stars。 A bit hard to get through the first half。 There's just a lot of describing and it could have been more shown。 Anyways, starts picking up halfway through。 I was super interested in figuring out what was going on。 The answer was pretty cool, although the ending was incredibly vague so I was fairly disappointed in that。 Overall not bad, just nothing incredibley heart stopping。 3。5 stars。 A bit hard to get through the first half。 There's just a lot of describing and it could have been more shown。 Anyways, starts picking up halfway through。 I was super interested in figuring out what was going on。 The answer was pretty cool, although the ending was incredibly vague so I was fairly disappointed in that。 Overall not bad, just nothing incredibley heart stopping。 。。。more

Got a claustrophobic atmosphere, as set in a remoteness part of Iceland。 This was a puzzle story with a supernatural element that I enjoyed reading。 Una, the main character, was relatable and the dynamics of the small town was captivating。 A good read。

This is a solid four-star thriller。 The author (and translator!) do an amazing job of crafting a claustrophobic, brooding, chilling setting — a remote Icelandic village where outsider Una struggles to fit in。 As she discovers the village’s secrets she’s confronted with a bloody past that echoes into present-day。 Characterization and setting were both wonderful - I love stories about insular communities and the author painted a chilling picture。 One star off for some frustrations with Una (just l This is a solid four-star thriller。 The author (and translator!) do an amazing job of crafting a claustrophobic, brooding, chilling setting — a remote Icelandic village where outsider Una struggles to fit in。 As she discovers the village’s secrets she’s confronted with a bloody past that echoes into present-day。 Characterization and setting were both wonderful - I love stories about insular communities and the author painted a chilling picture。 One star off for some frustrations with Una (just leave already!), a bit of a deus ex machina ending, and a plot twist that was a little too believable to be worth the slow burn runup。 I was also frustrated that Una’s father’s suicide was never explored in great depth despite it obviously deeply impacting Una。 Nevertheless, this is a solid four stars and a quick read once you get through a bit of a slow beginning third。 。。。more

A nordic noir with 2 mysteries, very atmospheric and as a reader you feel and know as much as Una does when she arrives in Skalar with it's tiny population of 10。 She's treated with suspicion by nearly all and her 2 pupils present their own challenges。 Her own circumstances leave her vulnerable and alcohol is her way of coping, but when she needs her wits about her this could put her in an even more difficult position。 A nordic noir with 2 mysteries, very atmospheric and as a reader you feel and know as much as Una does when she arrives in Skalar with it's tiny population of 10。 She's treated with suspicion by nearly all and her 2 pupils present their own challenges。 Her own circumstances leave her vulnerable and alcohol is her way of coping, but when she needs her wits about her this could put her in an even more difficult position。 。。。more

Loved the Iceland setting。 The plot line was just eh and ending was huh? All 14 characters in book were one dimensional and I never really felt like I knew any of them。 It did make me want to visit Iceland, so that’s a good thing!!

Taut mystery/horror/supernatural。 For this reader, that ticks all the boxes。

Is Una in danger?Did I mention the house where Una stays is haunted by a little girl in a white dress? What a strange read。 I felt Una was a weak character who lacked substance。 I am tired of reading books where the protagonist is a weak female。。。。 I want to hear about a woman take charge and not take malarkey from others! 。。。more
